Alerts and Warnings

Flood alerts / warnings – What are they and how do I contact the Environment Agency to sign up?

There are two separate things – Alerts and Warnings – and you can sign up for these from the Environment agency. It is quite straightforward. They are issued by the Environment Agency based on existing water levels and forecast rainfall.

By Phone

  1. Phone the Environment Agency Floodline on 0345 988 1188 and press 1 to select England
  2. You will be offered a choice of numbers to press, but press 2 to sign up for flood warnings
  3. You will then be told how to sign up for flood warnings, the type of flood warnings you will receive, the ways you can receive flood warnings, and how you can check on-line for current flood warnings in your area.

Online

  1. Go to https://www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings and follow instructions

What you get back

  1. Depending on what you select
    1. You’ll get a call from Floodline when your alert or warning level is met.
    2. You’ll get an email which has a little more info
  2. Details are available anytime at oncheck-for-flooding.service.uk
  3. It is worth understanding what each alert / warning level means to you.
    1. The Alerts are usually for low lying farmland that is nearby – it is not a warning that Lowdham is about to flood.
    2. The Warning usually means the Beck will flood within an hour. At this stage the cricket / football pitch will probably be full or filling.
  4. You’ll be notified when the alerts / warnings are no longer in force.

  1. At any time you can check the latest situation on the Environment Agency Floodline website atcheck-for-flooding.service.uk . The link, any many other bits of information, is also available from the Dashboard on the Lowdham Flag website ( https://lowdhamvolunteers.org/flooding-key-info2/ )

In addition you can sign up to a WhatsApp Group to get a warning from Lowdham Flag which is based on a prototype EA warning. This would trigger after the EA Alert but before the EA Warning and is thought to be 2-3 hours ahead of any flood. Call 07946 522629
